Window Drapery & Treatments: Scottsdale, Phoenix, Paradise Valley & Cave Creek

Window Treatments in Scottsdale

When selecting window treatments for your home, you have many options. Below, we will share some of our favorites.

Window Drapery + Treatments in Scottsdale

Roman Shades:

Roman shades are a great solution for your window coverings in areas where you have tight spaces or children. They generally open from the bottom to the top and we prefer a clean look of a flat panel roman shade. You can line these and also add blackout lining for complete darkness in the bedroom.

Drapery Panels:

Drapery panels are our most requested type of window covering. Most often, clients will want to go with custom drapery made by our workroom so we can ensure the length is the perfect height for ceilings. We always go as high to the ceiling as possible to make your windows look larger. Store bought drapery is a difficult solution because it often only comes in 3 lengths which means you will have to hang them at a less than ideal height to make them work. Like roman shades, you can add lining and blackout lining to drapery.

Drapery Hardware:

Clients are often surprised by the price of custom drapery hardware. Custom hardware allows us to install sturdy rods that will support your drapery over time and we also have the option for long continuous rods vs. smaller rods over each window. This will give you a higher end look.

Living with Lolo is able to help you with all your drapery and window covering needs. You can visit your home and measure the same day to make the process quick and easy for you. We will arrive with carefully chosen fabric samples to not over complicate your decisions and ensure you end up with the perfect look for your home.

What to Look for When Buying Luxury Plank Flooring?

The addition of underlayment makes the floor even less stressful to your feet.

You care for Luxury Vinyl Flooring just as you would tile, so you can mop or vacuum with ease.

Best Luxury Vinyl Floor

Cost of Maintenance

All types of floors need care and maintenance. Some floors are more inexpensive and straightforward to maintain than others.

The good news is that vinyl plank flooring is more resistant to stains, bacteria, and mold by merely mopping.

There is no need to worry about re-sanding, resurfacing, and refinishing.

Best Luxury Vinyl Floor

 Sustainability

Installing a sustainable floor is key when considering building or remodeling your home.

According to research, high-quality vinyl plank floors can last about three decades when compared to tiles and hard stones.

Interior Design Concepts

Interior Design Concepts

Creating a Great Interior Design Concept

There are essential interior design concepts that you must follow as an interior designer. Otherwise, the result comes out in shambles. After all, there is a thin line between concept, principle, and beauty.

In this post, you’ll learn those critical design principles that will help you produce the desired fine finish that your interior décor deserves. Who knows, others may choose to take up interior design as a career, and that man at the threshold of ditching the profession may have second thoughts and remain in his passion.

Let’s get started by explaining what interior design is. That possibly will give us a sense that the interior designer is much more than one who knows where and how to hang those pictures, position the TV, or place the kitchen cabinet.

Interior design is the art or process of designing the interior decorating of a structure, a room, or a building. As an essential component of our lives, the design affects how we think, feel, live, work, play, and heal. So, in simple terms, interior design is a blend of aesthetics of art with the science of knowing people’s behavior to make a space genuinely functional.

Now you have an idea of what you’re as an interior designer, knowing that an interior designer may decorate, but a decorator doesn’t design. What, then are those principles that set you apart as an interior designer and not a mere decorator?

You need to take the entire house as a unit. Two, invent a rhythm. Creating a focal point is as important as imagining a design. Be detailed, and finally maintain absolute balance. What does each of these interior design concepts mean? Find out below.

1. Interior Harmony

Designing a house transcends the mere juxtaposition of individual elements; it is an intricate orchestration of spaces interconnected through various architectural components such as halls and stairways. A home, when viewed as a holistic entity rather than an amalgamation of disjointed parts, manifests a sense of coherence and continuity.

The essence of harmony within a design goes beyond the visual appeal; it evokes a profound feeling of unity and tranquility. Achieving this harmony necessitates a thoughtful integration of uniformity in color, theme, and style throughout the entirety of the design. While the shapes, textures, and sizes of architectural forms may diverge significantly, the challenge lies in orchestrating these diverse elements to work in unison, creating a seamless and unified whole.

Diversity is inherent in design, and this diversity extends to color palettes. While the shades may vary across spaces, they must be chosen with a keen eye for complementarity, ensuring that each hue harmoniously coexists with its counterparts. This nuanced approach to color selection adds depth and dimension to the overall design, fostering a sense of cohesion while embracing the richness that diversity brings.

The concept of harmony extends beyond the visual realm to encompass the emotional and functional aspects of a living space. The layout and flow of the house should be carefully planned to enhance the ease of movement and functionality, further reinforcing the idea that every part contributes to the overall unity.

2. Rhythm in Interior Design Style

Rhythm is as important to music as to conceptual design. When you think of rhythm in interior design, you’re talking about generating visual interest by creating patterns of repetition and contrast. Rhythm defined in terms of continuity, recurrence, and movement.

Rhythm is manifest in the four properties of repetition (using more than one element or the same element more than once, e.g using color more than once or theme and color together), progression (increasing or decreasing one or more qualities of an element, e.g. a cluster of candles of varying sizes), transition (creating a smoother natural flow for the eye, e.g. using an arched doorway gives a gentle lead to the eye), and contrast connotes putting two different elements in opposition to each other (putting a black pillow on a sofa or a triangle and circle).

3. Interior Balance

As an essential concept of the development of the interior, balance creates a feeling of stability and equilibrium. Whether through color, pattern, theme, texture, or shape, a balance should be created in all the elements that make up the design. It is about ensuring equal distribution and approximation of the visual weight of objects in a room.

Balance comes in three ways, namely symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial:

    • Symmetrical balance: when you look at any traditional or formal interior design, you’ll find a lot of symmetrical balance in there. It consists of spaces that are evenly distributed or repeated on the same axis on two sides of a room. For instance, when you place two chairs in the same position on either side of two living rooms. But symmetrical balance can create some sense of monotony.
    • Asymmetrical balance: although more causal and complex, the asymmetrical balance is a common trend in modern design. Yet it is interesting and livelier. This is because it creates a balance that doesn’t require duplicating visual weights of lines, colors, forms, and textures. Positioning two dissimilar objects of equal visual weight, e.g., placing two chairs on the other side to create a balance for a sofa, is a form of asymmetrical balance.
    • Radial balance: when some elements radiate around or from a focal point, then the radial balance is achieved. The spiral staircase and a round dining table arrayed by some set of chairs are perfect examples of radial balance.

4. Interior Focal Point

Focal points, integral to interior design concepts, serve as pivotal elements that capture attention and establish visual interest within a space. These strategic elements are carefully selected and strategically placed to guide the viewer’s gaze, creating a harmonious balance and emphasizing the unique personality of a room. Interior design concepts often revolve around the thoughtful integration of focal points, which can range from eye-catching art pieces and statement furniture to architectural features like fireplaces or large windows. These carefully curated elements not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of a space but also contribute to the overall functionality and flow of the design. By manipulating the visual hierarchy through the placement and design of focal points, interior designers can skillfully influence the perception of a room, creating a cohesive and engaging environment that reflects the client’s style and enhances the overall living experience.

5. Proportion and Scale the Design

Proportion and scale are a key interior design concept, playing a pivotal role in shaping the visual harmony and overall aesthetic appeal of a space. Achieving the right balance between elements of different sizes ensures that a room feels well-coordinated and inviting. Interior designers meticulously consider the proportions of furniture, decor, and architectural features to create a sense of equilibrium within the design. Scale, on the other hand, dictates the relative size of objects in relation to the surrounding space. Striking the perfect balance between proportion and scale involves careful consideration of room dimensions, furniture dimensions, and the spatial relationships between various design elements. A keen understanding of these concepts allows designers to avoid visual overwhelm or monotony, ultimately crafting interiors that feel both comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. By skillfully navigating proportion and scale, interior designers transform spaces into visually compelling and functionally efficient environments that resonate with a sense of balance and coherence.

Conclusion

Without a doubt, you’ve learned some interior design concepts. It is not enough to just read or scan through this post. You’ve got to be on top of your game and take the lead in the design industry. Apply these principles of interior design and surely your next job should earn you a standout deal. Contact us today to help you implement these interior design concepts into your next home design.

Top 4 Different Types of Countertops . Phoenix AZ . Interior Design

Top 4 Different Types of Countertops

Looking for a review showing you the different types of countertops but keep finding information that doesn’t address your needs? Well, we’ve got back here.

We have compiled a list of the Top 4 Different Countertops with their advantages and disadvantages so that you can easily make an informed decision when buying. Let’s dive in.

1. Quartz Countertop

Open dining area with wood table

Guess what?

The countertop is
an engineered stone that contains more quartz particles than other minerals.
The stone is shaped into slabs and fixed with resin.

That’s not all.

The engineered stone has a non-porous surface that resists both scratching and staining. Besides that, it occurs in a vast number of colors to suit the taste and preferences of different people.

Lastly, a quartz countertop is more adaptable and offers high performance when compared to other materials used to make countertops.

Pros

  • Highly durable
  • Easy and simple to install
  • Resistant to staining and scratching
  • Result in uniform slabs after installation.
  • Easy to clean with a damp cloth

Cons

  • Tend to be quite expensive
  • The countertop is heavy
  • Not immune to heat and direct sunlight

2. Marble Countertop

bathroom design

Are you thinking of installing a countertop in the kitchen or bathroom? It is only fair to ask if you could get a marble countertop.

The sheets of marble tend to be unique, which can help bring out the luxurious outlook in the kitchen or bathroom.

However, they cannot be used in the whole kitchen since they are pretty expensive and not resistant to staining as well as scratching.

Besides that, the marble tends to vary in size of the grains and the amount of veining. This is the reason behind the unique appearance.

Pros

  • Offers a luxurious outlook
  • Tend to be waterproof
  • Excellent resistance to heat
  • Highly durable when cared for properly
  • Broad-spectrum of colors and veining

Cons

  • Too costly
  • Installation tends to be quite difficult
  • Prone to staining and scratching

3. Granite Countertop

Interior design concept - Granite Countertop + Types of Countertops

Granite is a popular material for making countertops since they are pretty affordable. If you have a low budget, this is the perfect choice.

The most beautiful thing is that it real helps to bring out the elegance in the kitchen, which is why it can perfectly fit in any kitchen design layout.

Granite is composed of different minerals; hence too abundant in the spectrum of colors that help to foster an attractive appearance after installation.

Pros

  • Help to beautify countertops
  • Eco-friendly countertop since it is extracted from natural materials
  • Quite durable and robust
  • Easy to clean with a damp cloth
  • Resistant to heat, stain, and scratches

Cons

  • Slabs tend to have imperfections after some time
  • Make knives to become blunt when cutting through it
  • Not ideal for DIY installation
  • Corners are prone to breakage when something heavy fall on it

4. Soapstone Countertop

Bright kitchen design ideas

Another excellent material for countertops which is eco-friendly since it is extracted from natural materials.

Soapstone material is ordinarily dark gray, that offers an excellent alternative for those people who want a smooth and silky feel.

The antique-like patina feature tends to make the kitchen quite attractive regardless of the design style. Besides that, soapstone can also be used as a sink material.

One thing that tends to blow the mind of people is the ability to resist stains and the strength that enhances durability.

Unfortunately, the antique-like characteristics are non-resistant to scratches, and this is the reason why you need to be extra careful when using the countertop.

Pros

  • Highly resistant to stains
  • Wide range of colors for attractiveness
  • Relatively resistant to heat
  • Simple to correct damages by sanding out

Cons

  • Tend to darken with time
  • Not suitable for DIY installation
  • Need to be treated with mineral oil

If you’re looking to do a little more research into choosing the best countertop for your kitchen, make sure you check out the scientific approach to choosing the best kitchen countertop materials.

Welcome to our Cave Creek, Arizona home! Now that you’re here, come in and stay awhile! This spot is our guests’ first impression of our home and it was important that it accurately set the entire tone for the rest of our house. Being an interior designer, I am always shopping for my client’s and while I was, months before our home was done, I saw this rug & knew I needed to have it in our entry! The bright jewel tones, the faux vintage look, and the all-around style factor had me at hello! It has a low pile which is great for standing up to everyday vacuuming which is a must with my two furry friends.

A chandelier in the entryway is a must. Who’s with me? It’s a great place for a little bit of fancy & high impact! I found this piece at a local showroom & it immediately stood out from the rest. This pendant is the epitome of luxury & glamor while the modern shapes keep it from looking too gaudy. Confession- this showed up on my doorstep and each of the 146 crystals were individually wrapped and guess who unwrapped and hung everyone? Next time, I’ll be hiring someone to do this!

These mirrors are oldies but goodies! They were one of the first things I bought, over 10 years ago, to decorate my 1st condo. Don’t you just love when you have such good taste that the store you bought them at still sells them 10 years later?

The bench is an amazing find! Talk about a good deal! It’s the perfect spot for visitors to drop their purses when they stop by & it also doubles as a place for our UPS guy to leave our millions of Amazon packages. What did we even do before Amazon Prime?

Backyard Design Ideas

Backyard Design Ideas

Where do I even start?! This was the first house we’ve lived in that didn’t come with any landscaping! We have learned a ton in the process of landscaping both our front and backyards. We even hired the most polished and personable landscaper to do both yards & guess what? He ended up being a total crook! Lesson learned: Even if a contractor presents you with a ROC #, do your research! This one had a ROC # on his letterhead & e-mail signature but it wasn’t really his! This was one expensive mistake but in the end, we found the nicest & most talented landscape designer to help us fix the problems & move forward with an even better yard! My vision for the backyard was that I wanted to feel like we were at a fancy resort without ever leaving, think Palm Springs. Even though our yard backs up to the desert, I wanted the view fence and our masonry side walls to be covered in vines + hedges so that the yard feels lush and very secluded. Surprise! Do you even know how small the plants are when they first plant them? Let’s just say, it’s going to be a few years for that seclusion. Thank goodness we are planning on staying awhile.

Best Scottsdale Backyard Design Ideas

One of my favorite spots in the backyard is the fire pit. I designed our gas fire pit to be constructed from concrete and filled with the prettiest black glass. I love how modern yet classic it looks. At night when the fire is lit, the glass glistens and its just stunning! I also decided to have one end of the fire pit be larger and not perfectly symmetrical to the parallel end so that I would have a built-in space for entertaining. S’mores anyone?

Modern Interior Designer in Scottsdale & Paradise Valley - Living With Lolo

As far as outside furniture goes, I refuse to spend an outrageous amount of money on outdoor furniture here in Arizona because let’s face it, when it’s 120 degrees outside, your furniture isn’t going to last forever. My musts when shopping for outside furniture are that the cushions must be sunbrella fabric to protect them from the sun, they must be comfortable, & they must be stylish! But more about the best outdoor furniture in another post! How great are these chairs from Target? They are amazingly pretty to look at and comfortable too!

Cave Creek Arizona Backyard Lounge Chairs

My second favorite spot in the backyard is the lounging area. Laying here while enjoying a cocktail, listening to music, and the waterfall in the background completely transports you to a vacation spot far far away. The lounge chairs are also from Target. We have had them four years and they are holding up great! I replaced the cushions this year & that was easy because Target also sells the replacement cushions! Our pool feature wall is done in a stacked quartz that just has the prettiest sparkle when the glistening sun hits it.

Living Room Design in Scottdale, AZ

Hi there & happy Friday! I hope you have big plans this weekend or no plans at all if that’s your thing! We are headed out to the happiest hour with some friends for some oysters & dirty martinis! In the meantime, I’m going to share my living room with you. Our living room & kitchen is a big open space so it was imperative that we created flow between both spaces yet allowed them to feel like they were their own spaces.
Scottsdale Interior Design - Living Room Design Ideas - Living With Lolo
Our couches were an investment piece that we will have for a long time (I’ve linked a much more affordable version below) and the whole room was centered around them. Our living room is also our family room and we needed this space to be both functional and comfortable while looking stylish and pulled together. I have a rug obsession & when I saw this faux vintage rug on Life on Virginia Street during her office room reveal, I knew it was going to be perfect for our living room! Plus, when you see the price, you might just die. It’s an amazing price for the size of the rug! I searched long and hard for the perfect coffee table. I wanted the wood to compliment our floating shelves and our bamboo shades but I also wanted one that had black metal on it to complement our barstools and window hardware. You guys, this coffee table is so ridiculously inexpensive I still can’t believe it! I love asking people how much they think the coffee table cost only to shock them with the actual price. You need to get one NOW because I’m pretty sure this price is a mistake and someone’s going to notice pretty soon! Our TV wall houses a built-in cabinet in my most favorite navy, Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore and its finished with the cutest acrylic and brass knobs from Target! Target’s Threshold line is seriously killing it! I debated having our cabinet guy add shelving all the way to the top but instead opted for floating shelves. The wall behind the shelves & TV is a stacked quartz stone. I just love the texture it gives to the wall & it matches our pool feature wall that you can see from the living room windows.

This fiddle leaf fig tree is real & I’m happy to say it’s been alive for 8 months! I don’t have the best reputation for keeping plants alive & my husband won’t let me buy any more until I can prove I can keep this one alive. I think I’ve done it, don’t you? I hope you enjoyed this post & the great finds that I found for this room! Don’t forget to leave a comment below! Kitchen Design Ideas in Scottsdale, AZ

Hi & welcome to my kitchen! This post is a compilation of all the questions I always get about my kitchen, including sources! When we were designing our kitchen, having a big island was a must! I love cooking with my little one & we needed some space to spread out and get messy! Also, we LOVE to entertain & having a big island makes the most perfect spot to have appetizers when your friends come over.

I’ve always been a fan of Carrera marble in the kitchen, I love its bright white look. But, I don’t love that white marble is notorious for being tricky to take care of because let’s face it, I’m not the neatest in the kitchen & I’ve been known to spill a glass of wine or two. Also, everywhere you look you see Carrera. I wanted something different. I stumbled across this marble called brown fantasy at the stone yard and it took my breath away! It’s a marble but it’s one of the tougher marbles out there & it’s not totally white so it won’t show imperfections as things in life happen. 🙂 This slab of marble does not have any brown in it, but some of the brown fantasy slabs have a ton so you really just need to look for the perfect piece. Additionally, I had the fabricators do a satin finish on the marble so it is lightly textured vs smooth and shiny. I loved that it added a bit more texture to the stone and also that the finish makes it nearly impossible to see water spots.

Kitchen Interior Design Photos - Living With Lolo

When it came time to choose hardware and light fixtures for the kitchen, my heart was set on brass. Not just any brass, but the most perfect satin finish. I can’t tell you how many samples of hardware I ordered before I ended up with these bar pulls from Lew’s Hardware. Long ago I had fallen in love with the brass hardware from School House Electric, but I quickly realized with the number of cabinets we had that spending $34-$74 on a single pull was not where I wanted to spend our budget. Persistence paid off & I got the look of my dreams at a fraction of the cost.

Kitchen Lighting Ideas in Scottsdale, AZ

Let’s talk about lighting! I have forever been in love with Darlana and Suzanne Morris pendants from Visual Comfort and knew from the get go I was going to use them both in my kitchen. CONFESSION: During all of the shopping for the new house, I somehow ordered the wrong size Darlana Pendant! Imagine my surprise when it showed up & I’m not kidding you IT WAS HUGE! My first instinct was to exchange it but then the more I kept looking at it sitting on the floor I decided to have my handyman install it to see what it would look like up. The kitchen table space is pretty large and because the lantern is wide open it fits the space perfectly, & completely breaks every lighting rule you have ever heard! WE WENT BIG & We are staying home!

Kitchen Lighting Interior Design Pictures - Living With Lolo

The kitchen table, chair, & rug concept was 100% inspired by Bree over at Z Design at Home. When I saw her kitchen table set up, it was perfect. exactly what I never knew I wanted! She was so sweet and gave me a bunch of helpful hints on how to recreate it. That table! Those chairs! And, the hidden rug! My husband thought he hated hiding rugs until he saw it styled this way! Our chairs are from Restoration Hardware & now discontinued but I’ve linked a much more affordable option below.

I hope you enjoyed our kitchen tour! Please let me know if you have any other questions about the kitchen and I’d be happy to answer them for you.
